About the Competition

The Alaska Academic Pentathlon is an annual event that brings together junior high students of diverse backgrounds from all parts of Alaska to compete academically in five academic events. The Pentathlon is traditionally held in Anchorage in late April. This competition is patterned after the Alaska Academic Decathlon that has fostered academic excellence among high school students since its inception in 1986. In fact, many of our competitors have gone on to represent their communities and districts in state and national Decathlon competitions. Nine-member teams are composed of three students in each of the three grade point average (GPA) categories: Honors (3.75-4.0), Scholastic (3.0-3.74) and Varsity (below 3.0). (Students may compete in a higher GPA category, but not at a lower level.) The GPA is figured from the students' previous three semesters in the major "solid" subject areas (language, math, science, social studies).
